Why Traveling Without A Plan Is The Best

Why is traveling without a plan the best thing to do?

After all, when I first started to travel years ago, I always had a plan. My plan was to research and find out everything I can about the location I was traveling to. Then I would map out what days I would do certain activities, and what time I should be doing this and that. Overall It was a very tedious task.

However years past, and I have since changed my ways.

Now what I do is basically wait till the last few days before I am going on a trip and do some research. I almost never have a set itinerary for when I travel. I find it better and almost more relaxing to just skip all that planning research etc.. and just do whatever happens. If something were to be cancelled or not how I expected, I just continue on like nothing happen. In the end, it all works out and I end up having a nice fun adventure.

The reason I say this is because when you travel without a plan, it gives you an amazing chance of freedom and flexibility. You don’t have to rush to anywhere or be at some place at a certain time or day. You have nothing booked which means you can do what you want, when you want. Just let the day unwind and whatever pops up, just go along with it. You will find out it can lead to many new and exciting things that will unfold.

An example was, when I went to Japan.

I didn’t plan out what I was going to do my entire stay at Japan. So what did I do? I just wandered around, talked to some locals, asked for places to go. And it turned out amazing! I was able to see some temples and shrines that weren’t even listed on google or other sites. I was able to find amazing market stands that sold unbelievably good food.

I wouldn’t have been able to do this if I were to have followed a schedule and a set plan.

However, unlike me, most people who are new to travel are the exact opposite. They want to plan out every last detail to the second. Everything about them is scheduled. One hour here, One day there, etc.. Now I can see from their point of view why they would want to do that. First of all its easy and you just have to follow the set plan to enjoy your vacation. But when you travel you don’t have a lot of time to spare. Most people who travel are only traveling for one week or two. So they are on a big time crunch.

If you are on a schedule, that time crunch will surely get to you. This is because you won’t get to see as much and do as much at the areas you wanted to see. You’re mind will always be in a state of hurry. However that’s kind of true for most travelers. Very few people are able to constantly travel.

However the key thing to note here is that when you travel, “less is more”. When you are not in a time crunch, you get to spend more time in one place and see and do more things. You get to be relaxed and not be in a rush. It makes a huge bit of difference.

When I first started to travel, my itineraries were basically me trying to cram in every thing I could possibly do. However years later when I looked back on it, I realized that it wasn’t feasible at all. So now instead I just look for a few things that look interesting that I want to see and plan around them. Much easier thing to do.

So my general rule of thumb for a great vacation or trip is to just figure out a general idea of what you want to do. Jot a few notes down and space out your ideas. Then just let your travels unwind by itself. This way, you aren’t committed to one place entirely and can change it up whenever you feel like it.

Their is no such thing as a “best route”. However a general guideline is to keep moving forward. Don’t backtrack yourself. That way you can keep the costs down and you know a general idea of where to go. This way you can pick your destinations and decide whether you want to stay longer or shorter.

Another thing to note is that if you were to plan out your travels, sure it might seem fun and nice. However every body who travels will be able to tell you that unexpected things can happen. Such as a sudden closure or you lost your money. Which is why you have to be flexible when you travel. If you aren’t, then you are going to be stressed out and mad over any changes that might occur. You also won’t be able to fully enjoy your attractions because you are always rushing around. Worried that you might miss out on something if you are a bit late.

So instead just plan freely. Let your travels casually flow its natural course.

So how would I plan my travels now? Let me show you!

  • Step 1 – Before you go on the trip, plan out exactly what you want to see.
  • Step 2 – After you have decided on what you want to see, go through it and see how big and how much there is to do at each attraction.
  • Step 3 – Cut out the ones that don’t seem to be as enjoyable as the rest.
  • Step 4 – Once you have cut out the rest and are narrowed in on a few attractions, just focus on those.
  • Step 5 – If you still have time after finishing those attractions then you can casually go to another area or attraction.

When you travel around, its always good to give yourself some extra room for things you like or dislike or even room to take a rest. The best thing to do is just decide on where to go but don’t pack in too many things to do as you just won’t have enough time to do them all.

The best way is to just get a general idea of where you are going and be flexible.

That is why traveling without a plan is a really good idea and one everybody should try.
