However all this research can be overwhelming or confusing as there is simply a lot of information for you to find out.
Fortunately enough, we made it simple for you.
In this post, we’ll go over exactly what travel insurance is and what it does. You’ll learn everything you need to know about travel insurance and what to look for.
What Is Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is basically a plan you can purchase in which it will be able to protect you from certain financial risks and losses that you might occur during traveling. These losses can range from a wide array of things, such as minor incidents like a lost baggage, to significant incidents like a medical emergency in another country.
Not only that, but travel insurance can also offer access to assistance services wherever you are in the world. Depending on the company, some may arrange medical treatment in an emergency, serve as interpreters, help you replace lost passports, and much much more.
Some things you should know about travel insurance:
- Different plans have different benefits. It is important to choose a plan that will fit all of your needs, budget, and also travel plans.
- Travel insurance does not cover every possible situation.
- Travel insurance is designed to help cover events that are unforeseeable in your future.
What Does Travel Insurance Cover?
This is one of the most common reasons as to why people buy travel insurance. To help with any medical emergencies that might occur. Now although accidents or illnesses are pretty rare, they can happen to you.
Here are some of the stuff that insurance companies will cover for during a medical emergency:
- Your hospitalization costs
- treatment costs
- surgery costs
- medicine costs related to your injury
- medical evacuation
- visits to registered medical doctors relating to your injury
Medical evacuations are a pretty expensive thing to happen. Especially during times of emergencies when caused by an accident or natural disaster, these things can go well over $100,000, That’s why having travel insurance is so beneficial. Most of these plans will usually tend to evacuate you to a local hospital in case of injury or somewhere else if there is a natural disaster. Depending on the situation, some plans may even bring you back to your home country, although this is usually rare.
This is probably the worst outcome of any on this list. Now thinking about it is never pleasant, however if you are covered then it will give you and your family a peace of mind knowing you are protected.
In case the worst should happen, most insurance plans will cover the cost of a family member coming to get your body back to your home country. Depending on the company, some policies will even include cremation services or burial overseas if that is preferred.
Remember, this insurance only covers death in case of an accident. Things like suicide, death from drinking alcohol, drugs, or other things caused by the person is not going to be covered.
Just like any other type of medical emergency, this is only covered during accidental injury and sudden pain.
Regular checkups are usually not covered, nor are any major dental work that is not related to some type of injury or accident.
Flight Delays and Cancellations
If your flight gets delayed or canceled, then you will be able to apply for compensations from your travel insurance provider. That is assuming your airline doesn’t provide any coverage for you.
Basically, as long as the cancellation or delay is not your fault, then you are able to apply for reimbursement.
If you need to cancel your trip either during or before it starts, you need to make sure it’s for one of the following reasons. Either you have a verified medical reasoning, death of a family member, or the death of your travel partner, then you will be able to apply for reimbursement from the insurance company.
Be sure to have proof for whatever sickness you have or deaths in the family as you’ll have to submit it for verification.
Lost or Stolen or Damaged Property
If you are out traveling about and your items get stolen, then most travel insurance companies will be able to reimburse you for either some or all of the items. Depending on the plan, there might be limits on how much you can get back for gear equipment’s like laptops or cameras unless you have a really good comprehensive plan with additional coverage.
The good thing about this coverage is that it not only covers lost or stolen or damaged items, but it will also cover delayed baggage or baggage damaged in transit as well.
Travel insurance can also provides coverage for:
- Life Insurance coverage for accidental death or dismemberment.
- Rental Car Collision replaces your personal insurance or the rental company policy.
- Identity Theft provides services to help in the event of identity theft while traveling.
What It Does Not Cover
Now travel insurance does cover a wide array of things. There are still some things that it doesn’t cover.
Here are a list of some things that travel insurance will not cover:
Leaving Your Belongings Unattended
Most travel insurance policies will cover you for loss or theft or damage to your items and valuables. However it doesn’t cover you if you decide to leave the items unattended or in an unsafe location.
Unapproved Medical Condition
If you have some pre-existing medical condition then you need to tell your insurance provider. Any unapproved medical conditions can automatically void any claims you make. In most cases, you may also not be covered if you travel against the advice of medical professionals.
If you are going to be doing any reckless activities that are deemed dangerous, such as excessive drinking, taking drugs, etc… it can lead to a rejection from any insurance claims.
High Risk Sports and Activities
Travel insurance will probably not cover you if you make a claim on an injury resulting from a sport or activity that is deemed dangerous. Things like hang gliding, bungee jumping all fall into this category.
Not Listening To The Government
If your countries government has made a warning against traveling to a certain country, and you decide to travel to that country anyways. Then your travel insurance provider will not cover you for anything that might happen to you in that destination.
If your cash gets stolen in another country, your travel insurance will probably not cover you.
Missed Flights Under Your control
If it is your fault that you missed a flight then you are most likely not going to be reimbursed. If it was the airlines fault, then that is a different story.
The Travel Insurance I Use
There are many companies you can choose from to get travel insurance. One of my favorites however is World Nomads. This company was founded by a former nomad so he knows what it is like to be a traveler. They are my go to company for getting travel insurance and they do a pretty darn good job.
By choosing World Nomads, you are able to buy your policy or renew it in a short amount of minutes. They also have some of the nicest staff I ever seen who are able to help you with any questions you may have.
Not only that but they are also really affordable as their price is pretty fair compared to the other travel insurance companies. If you had to pick one company to buy travels insurance with, then I highly suggest this company.
