In 1864, preservation began by land purchasers Timothy and Thomas Hayes. And after a few decades, Fort Meig was eventually sold in 1907, only to be reconstructed by the Ohio Historical Society in the 1960’s. The fort’s museum became open to the public by 1974.

Between 2000 and 2003, Fort Meigs underwent a $6.2 million renovation, resulting in the construction of a 14,000 square foot museum and education center in place of the former museum.

Opened in 1891, the quarry was a resource for limestone ash which was used in industrial trades and glass making. In 1932, the quarry become flooded when workers struck water underground, transitioning the site from a working source to a recreation area for the Sawyer family.
