After all, Taiwan is an island that is filled with an abundance amount of things to do.
From the lively culture to the delicious food to even the historic attractions. There is definitely something here for everybody to see and do.
However, there is just one problem.
When most people talk about Taiwan, they are really only talking about one place. That place being the capital city of Taiwan which is Taipei.
When most people come to visit Taiwan, they only visit that one city. Hardly anybody ever goes out of their way and visits the other cities that Taiwan has to offer.
Which I found to be very sad.
Many cities besides Taipei offer their own unique attractions and scenery that will blow your minds away.
One such city is Kaohsiung.
It is the second largest city in all of Taiwan and is filled with amazing history and a vibrant culture.
It is also one of the oldest cities in Taiwan being built back during the Ming Dynasty, you can expect to find many historical attractions all over the city.
Now if you are wondering what there is to do in this amazing city, you are in luck.
In this post, I will talk about the 12 best things you can see and do here in the city of Kaohsiung.

In no particular order, here are the best things to do in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Lotus Lake is a man made area and has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city.
The lake itself is known for 2 things. The numerous amount of lotus flowers growing in the lake and the number of temples along the banks. One of the most iconic areas here are the Dragon and Tiger Pagoda.
This lake was also home to a number of different water sporting events during the 2009 World Games.
Liuhe Night Market
Liuhe Night Market is probably the most famous night market in the city. It is famous for its open air joints that feature all kinds of delicious seafood.
You can find an abundance of things to do here ranging from shopping, entertainment as well as eating tasty foods.
Sizihwan Bay is a beautiful romantic bathing beach as well as a place perfect for enjoying the sunset.
It’s natural bay is perfect for swimming and sunbathing alike.
Plus at every sunset, there will be large crowds of people who are patiently waiting to catch a glimpse of the setting sun. The reason for this is because the sunset and clouds change colors quite frequently. Making it a romantic spot perfect for couples and anybody in love.
Cijin Island is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. This island is best known for its beautiful beaches and many restaurants that feature delicious seafood.
Getting to the island, takes about 15 minutes via ferry. And is relatively cheap to board as well.
Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts
Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts is the place to visit if you are a fan of culture and history. It is here where you can find a variety of galleries dedicated to the fine arts. There are 4 floors to this building with each floor being something unique and different.
For instance, on the 3rd floor of this building, they even feature many works of calligraphy.
In the outdoor space of the museum, you can even find an ecology park, a sculpture park and an entrance plaza.
Pier-2 Art Center
Pier-2 Art Center is a park that features all kinds of modern art. In fact, many artists have started their fantastic art careers by making creative and unique art here in this area.
Visitors who come here can find many contemporary art installations with unique styles and art galleries all around the area.
It is a great place to see some creativity as well as being in an artistic atmosphere.
Kaohsiung National Stadium
The Kaohsiung National Stadium is the largest stadium in all of Taiwan. It attracts millions of visitors each and every year.
It is a great place to be as often times it is home to many concerts as well as local sport matches.
The stadium was built by a Japanese architect and features many solar panels all around making it one of the most energy efficient stadiums in the world.
85 Sky Tower
85 Sky Tower is the tallest structure in the city of Kaohsiung, and was formerly the tallest building in all of Taiwan until Taipei 101 was built.
Like the name implies, this tower is 85 stories high and has an observation deck located on the 75th floor. It is here where you can get an aerial view of the city and its surroundings.
Love River is an iconic place in the city of Kaohsiung. The reason the river is called the “Love River” is because of a pair of lovers who jumped into the water to commit suicide in the 1940’s.
The river winds for about 12 km through the city. Along the river, you can find all sorts of interesting things. For instance, there is a night market located alongside one of its banks. There are even many cultural events and live entertainment being held riverside.
Definitely the spot to visit if you want to have some fun.
Old City Of Zuoying
Old City Of Zuoying which is also known as the Old City of Fongshan County, is a walled city located in Zuoying District. It was built during the Qing rule period and is one of the first Taiwanese cities fortified by a defensive wall.
Although some of the walls and gates have been destroyed over its long period of time, it is still a sight to see.
Aside from the walls and gates, the Old City contains some pretty decent things to see. From Lotus Lake to a botanical garden to even the Confucius Temple. It makes for a perfect place to unwind and relax.
Monkey Mountain is a natural wonder that anybody would love to visit. It is home to a number of animals here including the Formosan Rock Macaques.
The mountain itself is made up of two peaks: Snake Hill twoards the northern part and the Long Life Peak towards the southern end.
The entire region has been converted into a nature park that consists of many different animals and plant species. It also has quite a few hiking trails.
You can even find ruins here that date back 4,000 to 5,000 years ago.
It’s a great place to roam around and be one with nature.
Siaogangshan Skywalk Park
The main attraction of this park is the 88 meter long skywalk. Tourists from all over are able to stand on the suspended skywalk and enjoy amazing views of the city of Kaohsiung.
The design of the skywalk is based of a musical theme with the main pylon resembling a violin and the steel cables of the skywalk being the strings.

As you can see, the city of Kaohsiung is a pretty fantastic place.
Just by looking at this list, you’ll find all sorts of things that you can see and do. It is a place rich in history as well as having a vibrant culture.
