Eat Some Onsen Food

Eat Some Onsen Food

As you know, Beppu has a ton of different hot springs all around, that often times, many of the locals don’t really know what to do with it all.

Which is why a lot of these places have been using the hot springs as a cooking device. No artificial heat is used as it is only using the heat of the onsen to cook the foods. This is actually a healthier way to eat because the foods will also absorb the minerals from the onsen and make it a lot better.

Not only that, but some places will even let you cook your own foods.

One of the best places you can visit to do this is Jigoku Mushi Kobo, where you can buy your own ingredients and steam them using the onsen waters.

Check Out Tanabata Matsuri

If you want to see a local festival here in Beppu, then you can head to Oita which is the neighboring city. It is here where you can watch the Tanabata Matsuri.

The festival celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the luni-solar calendar.

This festival is usually held in August and lasts for 3 days, so you’ll have plenty of time to come here and see it if you are in the area.

Check Out Beppu Onsen Festival & Ougiyama Fire Festival

Beppu is known as a town that is mostly filled with onsens. It is this reason that the town has decided to celebrate this fact.

During April, the onsen festival is held over the course of the first Saturday and Sunday. It is here where you can find a variety of dance performances, drinking parties and other celebrations that celebrate the famous onsens in this town.

Not only that, but during the same time as the onsen festival, the Ougiyama Fire Festival is also held.

This is where they light the entire mountain side on fire to inform the gods of onsen who are resting in Ougiyama in the winter about the coming of spring and offer up flowers, which will bloom after burning field.
