Pros And Cons Of Living In Houston
There are many pros and cons about living in Houston.
Many of which might surprise you.
However even with that being said, you should still take a good look at this list carefully and decide for yourself if this city is truly for you.
Pros Of Living In Houston
Low Cost Of Living
If you didn’t know, Houston has a very low cost of living.
For instance, if you were to compare Houston to cities like New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, the cost of living here is actually really low.
An example would be: You can rent a spacious and luxury 3 bedroom apartment which includes a garage and luxury amenities like a gym, game room, meeting room etc…for a low price of only $1,500.
That same price can probably get you a closet or a small 1 room apartment in a city like New York City or Los Angeles.
Now Houston isn’t the absolute cheapest city in the United States but compared to many other major cities, it is a terrific value for what you get.
Great Base For Traveling Around
Houston makes for a perfect base to travel around the country.
After all, it is located in the middle area of the United States, so traveling around to the west cost or east cost will definitely be cheaper for you.
For instance, depending on the months I can most likely get a plane ticket to fly to any city in California for about $100-150 dollars. If I wanted to fly to the east coast, I could fly there for around the same price as well.
Plus because Houston is a major travel hub, we have airlines flying to and from here from almost any country around the world.
So if you love traveling, this place would definitely be the place for you.
The City Is Extremely Diverse
As you know, Houston is the most diverse city in the entire country. Which means you can find people with different backgrounds here every single day.

This city has also recently begun an extensive green space transformation which adds many new parks as well as beautifying the old ones, cleaning up bayous, and adding many nature and biking trails throughout the city.

Cons Of Living In Houston
The Traffic Is Terrible
Because Houston is such a large city, there are always going to be tons of cars out on the streets.
In fact, it is actually pretty common for you to drive around and suddenly be stuck in a traffic jam for many minutes before even moving an inch.
This traffic can definitely add 10 to 20 minutes or more to your trip. And this traffic is especially worse during rush hour when everybody is trying to get home.
So if you are planning on driving around the city, I hope you will be able to get use to all the waiting around you’ll be doing.
The weather in Houston is definitely unpredictable.
You are almost never able to tell what kind of weather you will be having in this city as the weather is constantly changing.
For instance, you might have a nice sunny day one day and the next will be a thundering storm. Or you might get hail and rain or even sun and rain at the same time.
It is just too hard to tell.
Plus during the summer time, you can expect the heat to go into the three digits which is just insanely hot. You almost won’t want to leave your house during these times.
You can expect the weather to be bi-polar all year long.
So if you are planning to move here, you better get use to all this crazy weather.
As you know there is no state income tax for the city of Houston. Now this might sound great in theory, it does make for higher sales tax when you buy things.
In fact, most purchases will carry a 8.25% sales tax on the things you buy.
Mosquitos – Lots Of Them
Houston is home to many mosquitos.
It’s just one of those things where you always have to keep an eye out for when you are outdoors.
But this is something you’ll get use to fast as you live here for awhile.
