Is Japan Expensive To Travel To?

Japan

The answer to this question varies differently from traveler to traveler. It all really depends on what your travel style is and what things you are wanting to see and do.

Japan can be a place that is both expensive as well as being affordable to travel. For example, I spent 1 week in Japan last year and used a total of $2,000 dollars roughly for that entire week. My cousin who also went for a week but at a different time spent barely half as much as me.

The costs will basically depend on what you are planning to eat, place you are staying at, as well as any attractions you are wanting to see. Also the flight ticket is another thing that is going to be pretty costly. But there are ways to experience all of these things for a cheaper cost. More on that below.

That is why it is important for you to know all the prices of things in Japan before you travel there, so that you can be better prepared. If you know the price points of things, you are able to make a plan and be able to budget properly.

This is just an average guess based on a regular tourist visiting Japan who doesn’t want to spend a lot, yet still wants to experience the culture and life of Japan.

Depending on your budget, you could definitely spend less than this if you wanted too or you can spend a lot more if you want to indulge yourself into the Japanese experience.

But for a regular tourist who just wants to experience things leisurely, then this is the average you are expected to spend for 2 weeks.

How Much Does It Cost To Fly To Japan?

Japan

The cost of a plane ticket to Japan is probably going to be one of your biggest expenses on your trip to Japan. Often times the tickets will hover around $800 – $1,000 or more at least from the United States. However sometimes you might get lucky and they’ll have a sale in which you can find tickets as low as $500 – $600 dollars round trip which is a steal!

Before you buy your ticket however, you want to keep in mind that there are certain times of the year in which the tickets will be more expensive than usual.

For example, if you fly around March through June, the price tends to be at peak levels of expensiveness because this is the prime season of visiting. Many tourists will travel to Japan around these dates as the temperatures are usually nice and the Cherry Blossoms are in full bloom.

But in general, try to fly around Winter time during January or February as the prices tend to be lower than usual and not many people will fly there around this time.

Also, try to avoid Summer time if you can. The reason for this is because Summer time is usually when the rain season starts. So you’ll be encountering days with lots of rain or even typhoons if you go.

Cost Of Japan Rail Pass

Japan Rail

If you are planning to travel around Japan then one thing I would recommend is definitely getting the JR Rail Pass. This pass allows you unlimited use of the Japan Rail Trains for 7, 14, or even 21 days total.

The prices for the rail pass are as followed:

  • 7 days – Ordinary $281, Green $376
  • 14 days – Ordinary $448, Green $608
  • 21 days – Ordinary $573, Green $791

Most people tend to get the regular ordinary pass as it does everything a traveler would want. However if you want a more luxurious experience and service, then get the green pass.

However if you are only planning on staying in one city, then I would not recommend getting this pass as it is a waste of money.

Local Transportation In Japan

Japan subway

Do know that just because you have a JR Pass, doesn’t mean you can use it everywhere.

JR Passes are mainly used for surface rail lines so if you need to take the subway or bus, you are going to have to use something different.

The good news is that public transportation in Japan is actually pretty cheap and really simple to use. You basically will get yourself one of the seven prepaid IC cards like Suica, ICOCA, Pasmo or any other IC Cards. These IC cards don’t offer any discounts, but they are able to be used in many Japanese places like a debit card. Subways, buses, shops, vending machines and even certain restaurants will accept these IC cards as payment.

If you want to save the most money however, then traveling around Japan by bus can be the cheapest option.

Although it is the cheapest, it does come at a cost though. That cost being time, as this is often the slowest form of transportation. However if you are wanting to save money, then this is the route you’ll want to go.

Also here is a tip, if you travel during the night time, you can save a few more dollars as well.

Cost Of Hotels And Accommodations In Japan

Ryokan

Accommodations are another thing that will take up a huge chunk of your expenses.

There are many different places for you to choose from with various different price points.

Hotels for example are one of the most common places people will stay at when traveling anywhere. And here in Japan you can be sure to find a ton of them.

There are many kinds of hotels here at various different star ratings. However I would say to not rely on the star ratings that much and just focus on what suits you best.

So lets talk about the different levels of hotels Japan has to offer.

Budget Hotels

Budget hotels can be found all over Japan for a cheap and affordable cost. Usually they hover around $50 dollars for the low end and $80 dollars for the high end. This is per person per night.

They offer all the minimum amenities you would expect from a hotel, but not much more.

Mid-Range Hotels

Mid-range hotels is the next step up in the hotel choices. Usually they hover around $80 to $150 dollars per person per night.

These hotels tend to be the favorite among travelers world wide as they offer everything a budget hotel offers but with more things. And usually they are at a far higher quality than those hotels you’ll find back in Western countries.

These hotels also usually offer breakfast, a gym, free WIFI and for some even Onsens.

Luxury Hotels

Luxury hotels are the best of the best hotels among the country. You can usually find these hotels for around $200 or more dollars per night. Typically these are the 4 star or 5 star hotels you’ll find online when booking a place to stay.

They have the best amenities, best views and also usually very close to certain popular attractions.

Capsule Hotels

Capsule Hotels are something you aren’t use to seeing in the western countries. These types of hotels are actually really cheap and can range around from $20 to $50 dollars a night.

Capsule hotels differ from the regular hotels in that instead of a room, you’ll be sleeping inside a tiny capsule that usually only fits one person. Bathrooms and lounges are usually shared with other guests.

The only downside about this kind of hotel is the size. Most of them are made for Asian people and not accustomed for foreigners.

Ryokans

Ryokans are not a hotel per say but sort of like an AirBnB. A Ryokan is basically a traditional Japanese inn that is typically a single room with tatami flooring and a single table and futon for you to sleep on. Not only that but most of these places will serve you with a “Kaiseki” which is a traditional Japanese meal.

These types of places tend to be expensive as they offer you an inside look into the traditional Japanese way of life. Usually they can cost anywhere from $80 dollars for the low end to the thousands for a high end place.

If you have the money for this type of experience, I would highly recommend you stay at least a night or two in one of these places. this will give you the best way to immerse yourself into the Japanese culture.

AirBnB

AirBnB’s are very common all throughout Japan. You can usually find these places for around $30 to $100+ per night.

Most people should already know what an airBnB is already since it is pretty widely known. But if you don’t, it is basically a person renting out their home for you to stay in. Often times it can be the entire home or a room or so.

How Much Does Food And Drinks Cost In Japan?

Japanese Food

Depending on how much you love food, it can vary from very inexpensive to very expensive.

But as a rough guide, you can consider the following as a general rule of thumb for each meal:

  • Breakfast – $5
  • Lunch – $10 – $15
  • Dinner – $20+
  • Snacks – $5+

But in all honesty, you can easily eat things for much less than the prices I listed, but you won’t really enjoy much of the experience.

If you really want to experience the deliciousness that is Japanese foods like Kobe Beef, Ramen, Sushi, Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki and much more, you should probably plan to spend a little more.

Breakfast for example, is already included in most hotels and hostels so you don’t really have to worry about that. But if you are really hungry and want to try something different, you can go to any of the convenience stores located all around to buy some cheap sandwiches or ramen dishes for as low as $3 to $5 dollars which should satisfy you till lunch.

For lunch or dinner, I would recommend going to any of the restaurants you can find which should serve you up some really tasty dishes. Or if you want, you can even go to a street market where you can find all sorts of cool things. For instance, I went to a street market in Osaka where I got to eat King Crab leg meat with Scallops for only $6 dollars. I also got to try Kobe Beef Sandwiches for around $10 dollars. Although the portion was small, it was still very delicious.

But the point i’m trying to say is that you can’t really put a price on how much you are going to spend for eating and drinking. Every traveler is different and they’ll want different experiences.

If you are a budget traveler that doesn’t want to spend a lot of money traveling, then you’ll be happy to know there are plenty of cheap options for you. If you want a more luxurious experience, then there are plenty of options for those as well.

It all really depends on how you want to experience your travels.

But as a general rule of thumb, look back at the prices I wrote above and that should be the average spending amount a tourist usually spends for food and drinks.

Cost Of Attractions In Japan

Himeji Castle

Now Japan does have quite a bit of attractions which are free to the public. However not all of them are free. There are certain places which do require you to pay for things.

For example, certain Temples and Castles only charge a few dollars for you to go visit inside them. Same goes for any museums or aquariums you want to visit.

However if you want to do some other things like riding in a go kart around the city or attend a sumo match, then you’ll likely have to spend quite a bit more to enjoy those things.

The price I listed above for how much I estimate it’ll cost you to spend on attractions are mainly for things like temples, castles, parks and museums. It doesn’t include any extravagant activities like Disney or go karting.

If you are wanting to do Disneyland or Universal Studios and more, then you’ll likely have to add a few hundred dollars more on top of what you are already planning to bring.

A small tip is to always buy your attraction tickets in advance. This is because often times when you go to any of these attractions, they’ll be a huge line you’ll have to wait in for ages. So if you buy the tickets in advance, you can skip the line and go straight in.

Cost Of Pocket Wifi In Japan

Pocket Wifi In Japan

t

The price for this item varies however as it really depends on how many days you are going to be using it for and how much data you need. But for the most part, it is pretty reasonable.

Usually for around $5 to 10 dollars a day to use a pocket WIFI.

But even if you don’t use a pocket WIFI, you will still be in good shape. After all, most of Japan has places that has WIFI so you’ll always be able to connect online or use the maps.

Random Spending

Japanese Souvenirs

This is also optional as you don’t really need to do some random spending. But who wants to travel some place where they can’t have some fun? You never know what you might run into and maybe want to buy.

Also there are lots of entertainment areas in Japan where you can go have fun like at Karaoke Bars, arcades, and more.

So having some money put aside is always good in case you want to spend some money.

_______

Overall, the cost of traveling to Japan really depends on you. No traveler is the same. It can be really cheap or it can be really expensive. It all depends on what kind of experience you want to have.

But hopefully this list was able to make some things clearer for you and help you have a better understanding of what to expect in terms of how Much Does It Cost To Visit Japan.
