What are some fear factors that are preventing you from traveling solo?
After all, when I had first started to travel, I always thought that traveling meant going with a group of people. I had never thought about the idea of traveling solo as to me that just felt so weird and dangerous.
However if you were to ask me today what are my thoughts of solo traveling, then I would give you a totally different answer.
Initially I always thought that those who travel solo are loners who have no friends and that it can get boring fast. But now I realized that I was incredibly wrong. Traveling by yourself can be a whole different experience. One where you aren’t tied down to other peoples wants and needs. You can do whatever you want anytime you want. It has become my favorite part of traveling nowadays.
Although, i know there’s still many people around who think that traveling solo can be a scary thing to do. It’s this fear that they have that holds them back.
So I took the time to list some of the most common reasons that travelers tend to stay home than to travel solo.
- Is it safe to travel by yourself?
- What about female travelers? Can they travel solo?
- My friends and family don’t want me to go solo?
- Will I be lonely?
- What if I get lost?
- Will I get bored?
- Why would you want to travel alone? Wouldn’t it be better to travel with somebody else?
- But i’m scared, I don’t think i’m brave enough?
- I might feel homesick?
- What if I run out of money?
Is it safe to travel by yourself?
Safety is one of those things that’s always on peoples mind. Especially if it’s in an area that they never been in. But they have nothing to worry about.
Solo traveling is very safe in this day and age. Now it’s true that many decades ago it wasn’t really as safe but in today’s culture we have access to all sorts of information. We got the internet that tells us all the safe and bad areas, the types of scams that are going on. Also you have your phone which has gps, texting, internet, etc… basically everything you ever need.
Now although there are still some risks regardless of wherever destination you go to, almost everything can be avoided with some common sense. Just try to know and understand your surroundings and always act accordingly.
What about female travelers? Can they travel solo?
Yes! Even for female travelers, traveling solo can be very safe. Although there are a bit more issues and concerns that you have to be aware about. But it’s the same anywhere in the world. Just be alert at all times and use your common sense. things will be fine. After all, there are millions and millions of women who travel the world by themselves. If they can do it, than so can you.
My friends and family don’t want me to go solo?
What if our friends and family don’t want us to travel solo?
That is completely understandable as they might worry about you. They don’t want to have anything happen to you. They love and care for you.
When I first decided to travel by myself, the only person I told was my parents. I didn’t tell any of my friends or other relatives. My parents were worried at first, but I carefully explained everything I was going to do and how I was going to do it. This made them be at ease and put their worries away. They became supportive of me and trusted that I would come back OK.
If you have parents or friends that are worried about you and don’t want you to go alone, tell them this. Tell them to trust you as you are a grown person and can make smart decisions. Assure them that you done everything you could to learn about the destination and find out what’s safe and not safe.
Now there also might be a select few who are always doubting you and what you can do. There’s nothing you can do to change that. Just ignore the negativity as it isn’t needed in your life.
Will I be lonely?
One of the biggest things that I’m afraid of is being alone.
In my early years, I always wanted somebody to travel with me. Whether that was a family member or friend. However I noticed that sometimes it isn’t possible to have somebody travel with you.
My first time traveling to Taiwan, I managed to go to a bar and strike up a conversation with some locals. The next day I found a MeetUp group that was meeting at Taipei 101 and I went to go hang out with them.
The point is that when you travel by yourself, you are never really alone. There is always things you can do to meet other people.
So no need to wait for friends or family because after all, you might be waiting forever.
What if I get lost?
Now if this was back in the 1950’s then chances of you getting lost might be pretty high up. However in this day and age with technology so advanced, you have nothing to fear about anymore.
With things like gps, internet, texting and calling openly available to us, getting lost seems like a thing of the past.
Not only that but most people know at least some English so they can help you find your way. If worst comes to worst then you can just point and hopefully be shown the correct way.
Now unless you find yourself lost in some amazon forest by yourself which is highly unlikely, then you have nothing to be worried about.
Will I get bored?
In my opinion, anytime you travel, you will always find something that is interesting or fun. You will almost never run into boredom. From the amazing cultures that you see, the exotic foods you have never tasted before, to even the festivals and activities that they might have.
As long as you are actually out and about doing things than you will basically never be bored. I mean there’s just so many things to do when you are in a new place. You might have SO much fun that you might even even need to put in a few days break to just get some rest.
Why would you want to travel alone? Wouldn’t it be better to travel with somebody else?
In my early days, I would have totally said “YES! Traveling with somebody is always the best thing to do”. However now I would say “Heck No!”. I would totally prefer to travel by myself more so than in a group or tour.
By traveling by yourself, you are basically your own tour guide. You can also do what you want, whenever you want. No need to be tied down by anybody. It’s like total freedom for yourself. It can also help you learn how to be independent. As you will have to think for yourself, problem solve for yourself, and also do everything entirely by yourself.
If you were to travel with another person or group, more than likely you will have to abide by their rules or follow what they want to do. Your group might want to do something that you might not like to do, or you might like to do something the group doesn’t like to do. You’re tied down to their needs and wants. It’s hard to please everybody.
Which is why traveling by yourself is so great.
But even if you do travel solo, you aren’t actually alone. You’ll meet many great people along the way that’ll make your travels amazing.
But i’m scared, I don’t think i’m brave enough?
Being scared is a common thing among solo travelers when they first started out. But an easy way to get into the groove of traveling solo is by joining a tour group or go with a few friends. This way you can get use to the surroundings and slowly break away from the group.
Often times when people do this, they’ll eventually realize that there is much more freedom if they were traveling alone.
Anybody can travel by themselves. Just believe!
I might feel homesick?
Being homesick is probably one of the most common things travelers will feel. After all they are away in some strange country or place for long periods of time. People are speaking different languages that you don’t understand, weird foods that you never seen before. It can get tiring.
So a good thing to do is try messaging your friends and family from time to time. With things like skype, facetime, etc..now available to us, it makes contacting our loved ones much easier.
After all, being homesick is just temporary. It’s not like you are staying over there forever. You’ll come back home eventually and then everything will be fine. Just remember to not forget why you went traveling in the first place. That is to explore other cultures and learn and see new things.
What if I run out of money?
Money is one of the most essential things that we can have during our travels. So obviously it is important to have enough money to last us the length of the trip.
A good way to avoid running out of money is by doing some early research before you go to the destination. Things like finding out how much food costs are, hotel costs, transportation costs, etc…are important details you need to know.
This way you can avoid going broke since you have done your research.
Traveling, especially by yourself is one of the most amazing things that you can do. It allows you freedom to do anything that you want and also teaches you to be independent. Everybody should try it at least once in their lives.
So don’t let your fears hold you back from doing the things you love.
